Miller & Carter Steak House

We visited Miller & Carter on Friday 18th January for our seven-year anniversary, we wanted to go somewhere fancy, that’s had good reviews and somewhere we hadn’t tried before.

We were both really excited to try Miller & Carter’s for the first time as we absolutely love steak and good food, we had no idea what we were going to have but my favourite cut is the Ribeye and my fiancés is the Fillet so we already knew we were going to have a decent steak no mater what we chose.

From the outside the venue is beautiful is an old Harvester pub turned Miller and Carter, it has a great feel about it when you walk in you immediately see a large well stocked bar in front, seating areas to the sides and restaurant through to the back, the decor throughout is very clean and sleek.

Now you’re probably wondering why I mentioned the date we visited, well that’s because the place was packed. The 18th of January is before most peoples pay days and as we all know January always feels like the longest month so if this restaurant is packed in one of the most difficult months then this restaurant is doing something right!

We were then given the option to take a seat at the bar first or be seated at our table straight away which instantly gave us a feeling like they wanted us to enjoy our experience not just come in for food and leave again.

We decided to go to our table instead of up at the bar, we then decided on a two-course meal as we much prefer savoury food to sweet, we never seem to make it to the pudding menu and this time I was so full I didn’t even want to look at it out of curiosity.

Our first course was from the nibbles section, normally I wouldn’t class “nibbles” as a course, but we had one each and there was a lot. We had the toasted breads and beef drippings butter, personally from mine and my fiancés experience this isn’t something we would have again, the Beef drippings butter sounds good but in reality it’s just basically a lardy butter, its literally like when the fat is left to go hard in the bottom of a cooking tray, it wasn’t appetizing and the butter was solid and the bread was hard because it was toasted so every time you would go to butter the toast it would break into pieces, this would be much nicer if it was with a normal softer butter.

The next item they bought out I had heard a lot about, so I was very curious and excited to finally see for myself. They bought out the famous or possibly infamous Lettuce Wedge it is literally that simple, it is a wedge of iceberg lettuce topped with a sauce of your choosing, I had the Garlic and Grana Padano (Cheese) and my Fiancé had the Bacon and Honey Mustard.

Our review on this part of the meal was, it was a win! We absolutely loved the cold crunchiness of the lettuce, it was so fresh and very appetizing to look at and it made for a wonderful pallet cleanser before the main course. My advice is I would look at this more open minded as a pallet cleanser rather than a salad that’s missing the salad as most people explained it to be. The sauces paired beautifully and to be honest was a great way to continue especially as we weren’t too keen on the toast and butter to start with.

For the main we were completely spoilt for choice, there were so many steaks to choose from, but we found the perfect choice we had the Butchers Block! 24oz of steak to share which included 8oz fillet, 8oz ribeye, 8oz rump and a brisket stuffed marrow bone. This also came with, seasoned fries, onion loaf and steak sauce which we chose the British beef dripping sauce.

The wait for the main to come out really wasn’t long at all, and we absolutely loved that the waitress came out with the lettuce wedge and told us the steak was cooked but it was resting before serving which is exactly how steak should be cooked and served, it was small details like this that helped make our experience what it was.

When the food came out our eyes lit up, the food was beautifully coloured, perfectly seasoned and there wasn’t a single item we didn’t love on that plate (ok well maybe the tomatoes).

The fillet was cooked to utter perfection we had this medium rare and it cut like butter, the knife just glided through and when it came to eat it, it was the most effortless steak I have ever eaten, you didn’t even need teeth to chew this meat, it absolutely melted in your mouth.

The flavours and the colours of the ribeye were incredible and an absolute dream vision to a foodie, the juices that came out of the steak were exactly right, the colour and flavour was exactly why ribeye is my favourite cut of steak, this was again cooked medium rare and had a beautiful slight chard finish.

The rump was cooked medium and was nice but compared to the other two it didn’t even come close and because of this, the rump really was just like a standard pub steak.

The brisket stuffed marrow bone was something I had never tried before and to be honest I wasn’t sure what to even expect but I found the brisket to have a very American BBQ flavour to it and we both loved it.

The seasoned fries, onion loaf and Beef dripping sauce was enough to go back for alone. The Onion loaf is basically just a posher version of onion rings and it was lovely, really nice flavours and not too fatty. The dripping sauce was recommended to us by our waitress and wow what a recommendation that was! At one point I thought we were both going to start drinking it from the pot, it was so tasty, and I wish I could make it at home so I could eat it all the time!

The overall service was great, our waitress was friendly helpful and very informative, and our experience was fantastic. Honestly the only thing that would make me sad about this experience is if this was my only visit. We have already spoken about going back and treating ourselves again as this meal is quite pricey, but it is seriously amazing food and quite clearly cooked by people who are passionate about cooking.

We both said on the night that this is the easiest 10/10 rating we have ever given a restaurant and cannot wait to visit again.

I really hope if you go you enjoy it just as much as we did!
